065/365 – Not Sketch

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

I don’t know why so many people who have come over or driven me home this term say my area is sketchy. It’s fine! In other news, Toronto is really starting to warm up. It’s reaching about 10 degrees in the afternoon now. I sure hope we’ve broken out of winter. Apparently, it’s going to rain most of next week though…

061/365 – Cream of Mushroom

Friday, March 5th, 2010

I might not have mentioned it before, but after (finally) watching the movie ‘Julie & Julia’, I couldn’t help myself but to go out and buy Julia Child’s ‘Mastering the Art of French Cooking’. Since I got a healthy shipment of cremini mushrooms last week, I decided to try a simple cream of mushroom recipe. It was fun actually using mushrooms to make this soup from scratch (especially the part that told me to squeeze the juices out of the mushroom stems). The result, a hearty yet creamy mushroom soup with plenty of body owing to the copious amounts of sliced mushrooms used.

057/365 – Too Much

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

One night, I planned to cook some different things, but I ended up with way too much food for my roommate and me. Made a zucchini, kale, avacado and cashew salad, to accompany blackened chicken on simple couscous.

048/365 – Sleep

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

I’m getting to that point of the term where I’m again realizing I need more sleep. Up until this week, I’ve had a pretty good sleeping schedule. But this week has been brutal! I’ve just been going out too late at night. Gotta get my rhythm back…

046/365 – Style

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Two Points:

1) I’ve always liked the style of H&M’s clothing. For relatively low prices, there’s unique pieces. However, I’ve always thought their quality is not up to par with other pricier brands.

2) Sometimes…this harsh lighting is awesome. Reference: Lady Gaga’s Just Dance…haha.

042/365 – Sick

Monday, February 15th, 2010

I was sick last Thursday and Friday and stayed home from work those two days. After thinking about it, I realized what was wrong. Our fridge broke and a lot of our food went bad since then. I must have drank some milk which had gone bad and not realized it. It was quite painful and I literally lay in bed for two days. Had to take some medicine for the pain in my stomach…

041/365 – Ginger

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Decided to make gingersnap cookies. I always liked these treats with a little snap in them. Instead of using ginger powder, I shaved some fresh ginger in. The result was a cookie that was incredibly soft, but had a strong bite to it. I loved the aftertaste, but fear it may be a bit strong for some people…

040/365 – First Time Ribs

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

I went to the supermarket after work last night to pick up some meat since all we had at home were vegetables and fruits. In the meat department, I spotted that baby-back pork ribs were on sale. I thought it’d be a nice challenge for myself since I seldom cook red meat and have never even attempted cooking ribs before. All we had was ketchup at home, so I decided to make my own barbecue sauce by adding a bit of honey, lemon juice, hot sauce and Worcestershire sauce. After popping the rack into the oven…I remembered the cornucopia of potatoes we had so I whipped together a quick scalloped potato gratin and popped it in the oven as well.  Instead of breadcrumbs (which I had none of), I sprinkled oats on the top to get the same crunch factor. Obviously, the ribs were nothing compared to those at restaurants like Bâton Rouge, but they came out surprisingly tender and tasteful for my first try.

035/365 – South of the Border

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

I decided to make fajitas one night and found out they’re extremely easy to make and taste great!

033/365 – Raisin Loaf

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

This week, in our organic food box, we got raisins. Man were they plump and juicy! Decided to make a simple raisin loaf. Turned out alright, but I should remember to add some cinnamon and nutmeg to enhance the flavours next time.
