As everyone in Waterloo knows, the building complex that housed Mel’s and other shops burned down earlier this year. After they cleared the remains a way, an interesting collection of flooring remained. Above, you can see the floors of Mel’s, Sugar Mountain and Mr. Sushi stretch out behind Renee.

This summer, throughout the neighbourhood that I grew up in, one could spor a small-scale construction crane looming above. Turns out while I was away, construction on a new building for my old elementary school had started. Fun fact: construction one the site was by Ellis Don. Everytime I see Ellis Don, I just associate it with Renee, who did…a billion work terms with them.

Of course, during my short mid-summer visit to Vancouver, I had to try the new Guu, Guu Garden. I went with Rose and found that the setting was quite different from the other Guu’s. It seemed more relaxed, more of an “executive lunch” setting than a loud and lively izakaya. The food did not disappoint.

Growing up as an only child, I hold my friendships in very high regard and respect. When I briefly visited Vancouver in June, I was reminded of this when I saw this hanging on my bedroom wall. It’s interesting how it brings back memories, but is still 100% relevant now.
